An Open House, an Open Mind

This past Sunday, I had the fantastic opportunity to join Ginette, one of our most experienced estate agents at Keller Williams Scotland, at her open house viewing, with our colleague Lee by my side. As a relatively new agent in the Glasgow market, I have plenty to learn, and events like this are a prime example of why real estate is a true team sport, and why I absolutely love being part of this community.

I want to share what the experience was like for me, what I learned, and why I believe that the magic of estate agency happens when we work together, put clients first, and lift each other up.

Starting the Day: Stepping Into Team Spirit

Arriving at the property, I’ll admit the nerves were fluttering (a bit like heading to your first interview or exam). But with Ginette leading the way and Lee there to share ideas, those nerves quickly turned into genuine excitement. I realised right away: this wasn’t just about showing a house, it was about building relationships, learning by doing, and supporting each other to create a memorable client experience.

Ginette immediately made us feel part of the process. She walked us through her personal open house checklist, everything from preparing the property, to greeting buyers at the door, to sharing the right details at just the right moment. Watching her in action, you could see the years of experience at play. She was warm, calm, and relatable, always giving potential buyers space to explore while being ready to answer their questions.

What Makes a Great Open House?

There’s the obvious side: a clean, welcoming property, plenty of light, the subtle scent of fresh coffee (and, if you’re lucky, a plate of biscuits). But what really stood out to me, learning from Ginette and Lee, was what happens beyond the four walls:

  • Listening to Buyers: Every viewer had a unique story. Some were first-time buyers, eager but a little unsure. Others were seasoned movers, keen to ask all the technical questions. Ginette listened, answered, and gently guided conversations. There’s a real skill in meeting people where they’re at.
  • Building Trust Instantly: Trust is everything. Ginette and Lee helped me see just how important it is to be approachable, honest, and genuine. Buyers pick up on this straight away, they want an agent, not a salesperson.
  • Team Back-up: Whenever a tricky question popped up, Lee and I could jump in or take notes. We made sure no one was left waiting, especially when multiple groups arrived at once. This is the power of having colleagues you can rely on, no one is left stranded, and every visitor feels like they matter.

Learning by Doing: The Keller Williams Culture in Action

Keller Williams Scotland always talks about our ‘client-first’ culture, but seeing it in real time is something else. From the start of the open house to the final goodbyes, it was clear that teamwork isn’t a buzzword here, it’s just how we operate.

Ginette was the ultimate mentor. She took extra time to show Lee and me not just the “how” but also the “why” behind every part of her approach.

  • Setting Up for Success: She explained why setting up a welcome station (brochures, pens, info sheets) helps buyers relax and gather their thoughts.
  • Telling the Home’s Story: Instead of rattling off specs, she shared anecdotes, why the sunroom is perfect for morning coffee, or how the garden’s always full of birds in spring. These personal touches brought the property to life.
  • Feedback Matters: After each viewing, Ginette encouraged us to jot down quick notes about what each viewer liked or hesitated about. This is gold dust when it comes to negotiating offers or helping vendors understand the appeal.

Thank You, Ginette: The Importance of Mentorship

I want to offer a massive thank you to Ginette for welcoming me (and Lee) into the process. Learning from someone with her experience is, honestly, invaluable, no online course or training manual can compare to observing a true professional in action.

It reminded me of why supporting each other matters so much in our work. Real estate, especially in busy areas like Glasgow’s G11, G12, G41, and G5, can be fast-paced and competitive. But at Keller Williams, there’s no gatekeeping, just a willingness to share knowledge so that every client gets a first-class experience, no matter who they’re working with.

Meeting Buyers: Every Conversation Counts

One of my favourite parts of the day was meeting such a range of potential buyers. Some had scoped out half of the city already and came with detailed lists; others wandered in by chance, just beginning their home search.

With every visitor, it became clear that hosting an open house isn’t about high-pressure selling. It’s about listening, asking the right questions, and making people feel comfortable. All the small touches, offering a drink, chatting about their own needs, letting them picture themselves in the space, are what leave a lasting impression.

Some buyers stayed longer than others, chatting about schools, commutes, even the best local coffee shops (a key point for the G11 and G12 postcodes!). These conversations showed me how opportunity and rapport can grow with just a little bit of genuine attention.

Helping Each Other, Helping Our Clients

Teamwork isn’t just convenient for us as agents, it means clients are better served. With three of us hosting, we could manage multiple groups, keep the schedule smooth, and make sure no detail was missed.

Cooperation also means more shared local knowledge. Lee, for instance, had some brilliant insights on other properties for sale in Glasgow, which helped buyers considering more than one area.

The power of collaboration? It’s not about who “owns” the lead. It’s about making sure every buyer and seller has the best possible experience, so they’ll want to work with us, and recommend us, again and again.

Bringing It All Together: Why Teamwork Wins

After a day of learning, laughter, a few nerves, and lots of great conversations, I left the open house with a renewed sense of why I love my job.

  • The support of mentors like Ginette makes all the difference when you’re growing as an agent.
  • Teamwork ensures every client feels like the top priority.
  • Helping each other out, whether it’s running an open house, sharing feedback, or lending a hand when things get busy, sets us apart in the Glasgow property market.

Whether you’re looking for your next home, thinking about selling, or simply curious about the process, please know you’ll always have a team behind you at Keller Williams Scotland.
